Description

The debut album “Waves and White Horses” reflects the inner journey of jazz singer Christina Schamei and takes the listener into the most twisted corners of her imagination. It allows a deep insight into her musical-emotional world, in which impressions of creation, birth, death, doubt and inspiration merge into a world of sound. Compositions by both the singer and saxophonist Benedikt Koch, which were composed over the last two years (2015-2016) and developed with the Christina Schamei Quintet, are presented on the album.

Reviews

…with her multi-faceted voice, which sometimes enters warm, deep realms, then soars to crystal-clear heights, she introduces us to her fantastic world, in which she tells of creation, birth, death, doubt and inspiration. Schamei often uses her voice like a wind instrument, sings synchronized melodies with saxophone or piano, improvises over long passages, explores sounds, experiments. It is an enchanting mood, at times fascinatingly ominous, and the mixture of modern jazz and dark romanticism that make the album so special.

– Mane Stelzer MELODIVA

At the center of the CD is the richly varied combination of Schamei’s warm, bright soprano voice with Benedikt Koch’s bellied, dark-toned tenor saxophone.

Five musicians of exquisite standing have come together for this virtuoso project with compositions by Christina Schamei and Benedikt Koch, in which brilliant jazz and the high school of the voice merge into a captivating musical unity.

One could talk about Christina Schamei’s beautiful voice, about her intelligent, colorful compositions full of surprising melodic twists and turns and her delight in improvisation. We could talk about musicians who take great pleasure in communicating and conveying moods, musicians who give the music what it needs at every moment. But the best thing is that we listen to this music from start to finish with great pleasure and intend to experience it “live” one day.

– Matthias Nadolny

The composers Christina Schamei and Benedikt Koch deliver pieces here that have a personal signature, the lyrics alone in connection with the compositions have a high standard. Riverman by Nick Drake and arranged by Benedikt Koch, simply good. The compositions have been put together with great care and effort to create a great whole and you can tell that they have succeeded in producing something very good.
